The opening ceremonies for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada took place on Friday evening. The performances by the dancers, musicians, athletes, and laser light shows were stunning. The opening ceremony paid tribute to not only the athletes, but to Canada and its rich aboriginal tradition. We learned about Canadian culture and were mesmerized by the performances. Famous Canadian singers performed during the show and included the talents of Sarah McLachlan, Nikki Yanofsky, Bryan Adams, and Nelly Furtado.

Nikki Yanofsky blew everyone by her young age and amazing voice. She is only sixteen years old and belted out the Canadian national anthem, O Canada. She is a Canadian pop singer from Montreal who also incorporates jazz sounds into her music. She is working on releasing her first studio album.

Another great performance that was filled with energy and talent was by Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams who sang Bang the Drum. Bryan Adams has been releasing albums that have been popular in both the United States and Canada since 1980. He is a Canadian rock singer who also writes songs and plays musical instruments such as the piano, guitar, bass guitar, harmonica, and the keyboards. He and Nelly Furtado sounded great during their performance of Bang the Drum which was an Olympic tribute song.

Nelly Furtado is also a Canadian singer who grew up in Victoria, Canada. Her music has topped the American music charts and Internet Radio stations as well as traditional American radio programs. She has worldwide fame and sings folk, pop, R&B, and Latin rock music. She also plays an array of instruments such as the ukulele, guitar, trombone, and keyboards. She has been nominated for American, Latin, and European awards.

Sarah McLachlan has such a beautiful voice to accompany her outstanding piano playing. She performed a song while the Alberta Ballet dance company interpretive danced during her song. She sang one of her own songs, Ordinary Miracle, while she played the piano. Sarah is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and has also been a success in the United States. She sings emotional ballad pop songs and plays the harp, piano, and guitar.

In addition to great music being performed, the opening ceremony had dancing, cultural storytelling, and hundreds of fiddlers playing music. The ceremony included tap dancing, interpretive ballet dancing, and aboriginal dancing. The LED light show was mesmerizing and the poem read by Shane Koyczan was captivating. There were Olympic performances that will be remembered forever.
